Christmas PresentWhichever way it is looked at, the mid winter has long been a time for exchange of presents. Often these have been related to expectations of warmer and more hospitable months to come. In the Christian tradition Christmas is also associated with birth and expectation and, through the story of the three Wise Men, of giving. Add to this the association of St Nicholas with Christmas and his generosity in giving away his worldly possessions, and the Christmas Present convention was well under way. Today few exchange the wreaths, plants and other produce that were the convention in later Roman times. Instead a Christmas Present industry has grown up to cater for the imagination, pockets and demands of us all. For today a Christmas Present is a token of friendship and love, certainly an expectation for some, but a delight for most. |
